First flown in 1949, the British-made Comet was the world’s first jet airliner to go into service. It was designed to give Great Britain a definite edge in post-World War II transport and it was an immediate success. Other commercial aircraft of the period, such as Douglas’s DC-6, could not compete with the technological and performance superiority of the Comet. However, just when it seemed the Comet had sewn up the commercial-transport market, tragedy struck. Two deadly crashes within 16 weeks of each other revealed a design flaw that would eventually ground the original Comets for good. By the time the flaw had been corrected and the new Comet 4C had been produced, de Havilland’s jet had lost its lead to the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8.
The Museum’s Comet took its first flight on October 31, 1959 and became the first jet airliner for Mexicana Airlines, serving routes between Mexico City and Los Angeles until 1970. After 1970, it was briefly used as a charter plane, before being sold to Westernair of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The plane was refurbished in Mexico City, but remained unused by Westernair, who eventually sold it to an airline club in Redmond, Washington in 1978. It was eventually transferred to Everett, Washington and was acquired by The Museum of Flight in the early 1990s. The Comet has been undergoing a complete restoration at our Restoration Center at Paine Field since 1995.

Aircraft Overview: Aapke pyaar mein mp3 download.
The de Havilland DH106 ‘Comet’ was the World’s first turbojet-powered airliner, designed and built at Hatfield and first flown by John Cunningham in 1949. Turbojets offered new standards:
*High speed,
*Low vibration (no reciprocating pistons)
*High altitude flight (above most weather) and
*Safety (low-flammability kerosene fuels)
The Comet was revolutionary:
*of exceptionally clean design
*20 degree swept wings mounted low for the structure to pass below the pressure cabin,
*four engines buried in bulged wing roots,
*smooth nose with an unstopped windscreen (tested on a Horsa glider),
*integral wing fuel tanks,
*power assisted flying controls,
*cabin pressurisation using engine bleed air, and
*a tricycle undercarriage.
The Comet 1 and 1A (with higher thrust engines, higher all-up weight) could carry 36 to 44 passengers, 4 abreast. Cruise altitude was up to 40,000 ft with a cabin pressure equivalent to 8,000 ft, requiring pressurisation far greater than on any previous airliner. The Comet 1 entered service with BOAC in 1952, but in 1954 the Comets were grounded for a prolonged accident investigation after unexplained enroute disappearances, alter ascribed to catastrophic fatigue failure of the pressure cabin. Some success returned later, with the stretched Comet 4 series having a fully redesigned fuselage structure, and the RAF’s Nimrod maritime patrol derivative.

The Museum’s exhibit is the fuselage of the first of three Comet 1A airliners built at Hatfield in 1953 for Air France. It was re-assigned to RAE Farnborough as back-up fuselage for water-tank pressure testing, but not used. It was acquired by the Museum in 1985.

If you are interested in the history of aviation in the UK then this is an absolute must visit place. It follows the history of the Dr Havilland family’s passion for flying developing into manufacturing their own airplanes.Amazing seeing all the history and the workmanship that goes into the restoration of all the planes. It really is a hands on experience and the volunteers really make this place special. Definitely will return when the new hangar is finished. As a Hertfordshire lad by birth, I should have known about this place years ago. But glad I’ve found it now. Many have described it as a ‘Gem’ and it really is. It’s so important that the memory and history of the great De Havilland organisation is remembered and passed on to future generations.A truly great collection and friendly, enthusiastic volunteers. The guide in Hangar E was very informative and helpful.I loved being able to get really close to the exhibits.I think this was the big attraction for me.As other people have said there are a number of aircraft outside and exposed to the elements and slowly deteriorating but the Museum know this and are fundraising for another hangar.Dh 106 CometYou can see the aircraft being restored and interesting exhibits.Very relaxed atmosphere and great quality of information. There are lots of curators around who are only too pleased to give information on the history of the various exhibits. Well worth the entrance fee!
